Healthy Habits

Everyone knows that change isn’t always simple and that leading a healthy lifestyle takes some work. However, there are some easy things you can do today to help improve the quality of your life.

Healthy Habit #1: Eat breakfast every morning

Eating breakfast can help you to feel better, be healthier and maintain a lower weight. Research shows that people who eat first thing in the morning tend to consume foods higher in vitamins and minerals and lower in fat and cholesterol throughout the day. Breakfast can also help hold off hunger pains that might normally lead you to overeat throughout the day.

Healthy Habit #2: Drink water and milk

Aside from being essential fluids for good health, water and milk have been shown to help with weight loss. Drinking more water helps flush out waste and bacteria, prevents headaches, feeds your body by helping to circulate nutrients, and can even make your skin look better. According to the American Dietetics Association (ADA), three 8-oz glasses of low-fat or fat-free milk, when consumed as part of a healthy, balanced diet, have been shown to aid in body fat loss while maintaining muscle mass.

Healthy Habit #3: Move more!

An easy way to incorporate daily exercise into your life is to take a walk. Go to a co-worker’s desk instead of picking up the phone. Walk to the corner store. Park further away from the building. Window shop at the mall. Take the stairs. Every 20 steps a person takes is one calorie burned.

Healthy Habit #4: Make social connections

Forming relationships with other people is good for your physical and mental health. By volunteering, joining a club, taking classes and spending time with friends and family, you gain emotional support and a sense of belonging that helps to reinforce your identity, which can prevent depression.

Healthy Habit #5: Add fish and omega-3 fatty acids to your menu

Fish are a good source of protein, low in saturated (“bad”) fat and high in omega-3 fatty acids, or “good” fat. Omega-3s have been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease. Other foods, such as tofu and soy products, canola oil, walnuts and flax seed, are also excellent sources of omega-3s.

Healthy Habit #6: Find a hobby

Since hobbies are fun, they can also help people to relax, recover from illness and be healthier overall. Whether your hobby is painting, collecting, bowling or your pet, it can add fullness to your life and help to improve your well-being.
