One area of concern employers face today is the total wellness of their employees. And with more focus now on mental health, other topics once talked about very little—such as substance abuse—are entering the spotlight, too.

The timing for this couldn’t be better. Recent studies show the number of employees concerned about their drug and alcohol usage has nearly doubled since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. One study released last year found 49 percent of workers reported themselves as struggling with some level of substance abuse or addiction.1

And according to the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), nine percent of employed adults have a drug or alcohol disorder.2

Looking at these numbers, it’s easy to see there’s a rising issue. But for many employers, the bigger question is—how should they best support their employees?

Fortunately, quality vendors are emerging with point solutions to remove stigma and make treatment more accessible.

A new vendor arrangement: meet Lionrock

Beginning in April, Meritain Health has a new partnership with Lionrock, a leader in substance abuse treatment. As our newest vendor partner, Lionrock focuses on making treatment options for substance abuse more accessible by using an online format—also making it more affordable than conventional programs.

Various levels of outpatient treatments are available, depending what level of care employees need. And employees can connect to master-level counselors easily, by phone or video and for group or individual therapy sessions.

According to Lionrock, of the 25 million Americans who need help with substance use disorders (SUDs), less than 20 percent reach out for help. But online treatment solutions, such as Lionrock, offer increased flexibility and privacy—meaning added potential to reach more of those in need. Lionrock’s program success rates speak for themselves—80 percent of members who complete a program are still abstinent 16 months after leaving treatment.

Lionrock is also accredited by The Joint Commission, a distinction only seven percent of addiction treatment programs currently receive. And one more thing worth noting—many of Lionrock’s counselors and staff have successfully completed recovery programs themselves, giving them unique, first-hand experience to relate to members on a personal level.
